The Wood County Health Department has programs and information available to help you protect your community including, but not limited to:

Communicable Disease

Prevention and control of communicable illness or death through surveillance, investigation and education.

Hepatitis C, HIV and STD’s

Prevention of Hepatitis C, HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections through education, disease investigation and risk reduction counseling. Hepatitis C and HIV testing is available for high risk cases.

Tuberculosis

Prevention of tuberculosis (TB) and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) through disease investigation, screening, case management and education. TB skin testing – see Calendar of Events - TB Clinics. T-spot testing is also available – call for details.

Human Health Hazard Prevention and Control

Investigation and enforcement of the Wood County Public Health Ordinance to protect citizens from damage to the environment or the public's health.

Public Health Preparedness

Wood County Health Department is prepared to respond to all emergencies with a detailed plan of action and a system of communication with community responders. This response includes detecting disease outbreaks ; investigating to determine what the risks are to the public and who may have been exposed; informing the public and professionals of the specific disease threats and how to protect themselves and others; managing infected persons; i solating or quarantining affected individuals as appropriate; providing medications or vaccinations to people at risk in the population. Wood County Inspection & Licensing

Code enforcement, licensing, complaint investigation and inspection of retail food stores, restaurants, mobile home parks, pools, campgrounds, hotels/motels, tattoo and body piercing parlors. Pools & Water Attractions

Public Pools and Water Attractions in Wood County are inspected annually for physical safety, water quality and chemistry. In 2008 a New Pool Code went into effect as a result of the broader variety of water recreation facilities and chemical and safety requirements. All operators in Wood County were contacted and offered to attend a free informational forum about the notable changes in the pool code. By December 19, 2008 all public pool owners/operators must comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act. This information is also being provided to operators in Wood County. The act addresses the elimination and mitigation of pool & spa drain entrapment hazards.
